I am strongly biased in favor of trains because I like walking, I like being able to get up and move around when I'm in a vehicle, I hate being tied to my seat, I prefer zoning out or doing other things to paying attention to driving

I don't think I could've had this bias if I were only familiar with travel in the USA--as shitty as driving in America is, it's obviously the only choice for most trips.

Spending time on great trains in Japan is the only reason I know there are more choices at all, and I want other people to know they're out there too! But people with (perfectly comprehensible) pro-car biases are TERRIFIED to have anything decent to compare driving to...

...at the core, I think they're worried that choice in transport is impossible--that the only imaginable way for people to enjoy trains is if driving is suppressed and made as miserable as American transit is today. The inverse of the situation they already know and perpetuate.

if anything, better off-road transit makes driving better

I will never give up personal transport but I would use train service to go between cities in the region if it were available. Much rather drive 20 min to a train station in the nearby city than drive the 1.5+hrs.

right, exactly--nobody needs to get rid of their car to be able to use transit!
