certainly a benefit during a siege, but in the preindustrial world it was even more important to have food production close to consumption or else it would spoil during shipping

Probably depends on the level of mechanization in farming. You need a lot of people to harvest staple crops by hand. Hence you see some population correlation in places that didn’t have mass mechanization in the 1950s
