Difficult to find maps of agricultural productivity, but I imagine that this rule doesn't apply for the USA or Canada, and probably a few other countries--I wonder if it's a tendency of "from scratch" colonial countries to divorce population centers from agriculture?

Same thing in India. Historically these areas were able to support higher population levels.
I suspect the relationship is weaker now than in say 1980, because of urbanization and industrialization
