How are you still this mad that I'm not gonna give you a blank check to run cyclists over lmao https://twitter.com/matvei_daniilov/status/1028660393672142854 …

Let me be sympathetic for a moment: probably there are many, many drivers out there who had a terrifyingly close call where they nearly hit a pedestrian or cyclist. For a second their heart stops, maybe they swerve dangerously or slam on the brakes, but they avoid disaster

Once the shock wears off, driver may be relieved, but will also likely be angry: "how could this person put their life in my hands, when I could so easily end it in a heartbeat? how could they impose so much on me, when I'm just trying to get somewhere?"

Their momentum has been broken, their reverie of speed interrupted, and their capacity to *totally unintentionally* kill someone rudely shoved into their face...getting mad is an entirely comprehensible reaction. But there's a difference between comprehensible and justified...

...consider if they had similar incident while driving somewhere that bikes and pedestrians are prohibited, like a controlled-access highway, where instead of being surprised by a cyclist, they are cruising along and suddenly someone's brake lights are RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM

As with the other case: they maybe swerve, or slam on the brakes, but one way or another they avoid a crash. And they probably get angry, for similar reasons. But I think they will be more likely to reach the CORRECT reaction, which is: "Damn, I was getting careless there"

"I need to slow down, I gotta take it easy" ...and why do they have this correct reaction when its another car instead of a bike or a pedestrian? This is obvious: because now THEIR life is at risk too! Rear-end someone at +65mph and you might not make it...

When you nearly get in an accident, it's hard, for a few minutes at least, to get past your emotions and rushing adrenaline...but when you do, you MUST keep in mind: - I barely had enough reaction time - I barely had time to see that person I nearly hit - ergo, I MUST BE CAREFUL
