The best workaround so far has been to only add bus stops if there's a parking lot that the bus can pull into to drop people off...dramatically slowing the route and adding mileage to the buses

there's tons of bus stops here you wouldn't know are bus stops just because there's a single, small sign

I think they're to help alert the blind to the presence of a crosswalk?

there's other less obstructive ways to do that, those in particular are to help prevent wheelchairs from sliding into traffic unintentionally (they also have the side-effect of making anything with wheels smaller than a bicycle wheel unusable on sidewalks)
