OK, 800 AD I can def understand--but someone looking at the map in 1570, when Spain dominated the Americas and Portugal had colonies from Macao to Brazil...all sudden and rapid acquisitions, growing constantly...would they really have trouble guessing that NW Europe was rising?pic.twitter.com/kgs4fQajC3

and then there's this bit--as if the significant thing about Columbus and Cortes was how far they went and how many men they brought, and not what they discovered and subsequently accomplished there! Pizarro's stunning coup tells you everything you need to know about mere numberspic.twitter.com/saYVAveA6z

anyway...there's a lot of useful and interesting detail in here, I'm just a bit floored by some of the sillier parts:http://www.bradford-delong.com/2018/07/why-was-the-20th-century-not-a-chinese-century-an-outtake-from-slouching-towards-utopia-an-economic-history-of-the-long.html …

          - lack of serious external threats - only avenue for the ambitious is to join bureaucracy - total lack of curiosity about new and/or foreign tech and a while later, - massive opium epidemic stop me if you've heard any of this before

The Mongols conquered vast territories with military techniques few could replicate. It didn’t mean they were on the verge of the industrial revolution.

this also means Spanish acquisitions aren’t solid evidence that Europe was going to overtake China on a civilizational/technological level

not by virtue of their size alone, no, but that's kind of a point I'm making too (re: "mere numbers")

Even what they found (vast amounts of sparsely populated but maybe one-day productive land) isn’t good evidence either. Although I think I get your point- it’s about the elan of rising adventurers versus an absolutely stagnatory bureaucracy.

sparsely populated > heavily populated, at least if you want an empire to last instead of falling apart from internal strife...but the bigger issue I'm thinking of is the *location* and the sort of mobility and influence that it facilitates

I don’t think that’s necessarily true- Europe didn’t hold on that long to its colonies compared to the great empires, and certainly has had plenty of internal and interstate strife. Without industrialization the advantages of access to the Americas would have been minimal.

re: duration of empire, Spain and Portugal had very solid runs (250+ years is pretty good for an empire); re: internal and interstate strife, ya they had the former but aside from USA tended to lose colonies due to the latter; re: access, I just disagree

Chinese were such great explorers that Portugal established colonies in Formosa before them lol

Also, the difficult thing about the transatlantic crossing was being away from land for so long. Zheng He's journey, though far, hugged the coastline all the way. An impressive organisational effort, but not that impressive as seamanship
