IIUC the CO2 levels at that temperature were up into the toxic range for humans. But we ~certainly can't get back to hothouse climate anytime at all soon; it's a continental-drift-scale cycle, won't be back for millions of years

Humans can survive. We just would support far smaller populations. (Reminder that even if we have the same amount of arable land, current populations are supported by cheap oil and petro-byproduct fertilizers, which will leave us some day.)
