there's also people in JP who do that (with electric and petrol powered railcars, on 5 and 15 inch gauge), i've seen videos and it's really nice

What do you think of monorails using the Caillet or Ewing systems? The ultimate in narrow gauge. You might be able to get away with using bicycle wheels at the sides, given the very low loading they would be under. Add in suspension of course for a smooth ride.
