Humans are the OXYGEN in this metaphor (sort of...since after all they can travel without cars too), the vital parts that keep the whole body (read: human-built structures and environments) alive and running

Heavy traffic is an interesting case in this metaphor: on the one hand, it's what a car-based system looks like when it's actually got enough economic activity vis-a-vis infrastructure outlay...on the other hand, it can work like a clot, where demand for "oxygen" exceeds capacity

But all of this needs a disclaimer: while there are parallels between the human body and the life of the city, they do not have the same biology; metaphors like this are (in practical terms) kind of like trying to treat a human based on the biological function of a single cell

ironically in south-east England the reverse happened: suburban railways permitted so much decentralisation from inner London that it flipped the population to being car-owning

actually very much what happened here at first too--it's not only roads that can lead to too much infrastructure relative to use
