Japan's Army was successful until they had to actually fight a focused major power. Russia was straight *wrecking* them in Manchuria when the war ended.

they weren't exactly in the best position re: supply lines and reinforcements at that point tho

that said, any weakness on the part of their army only serves to underline the importance of prioritizing the navy

The whole fault of the war can be blamed on the Army, who could neither ever "win" in China, or admit that a withdraw was necessary to avoid an unwinnable war with the Americans.

Their navy could have held its own for a while, but its ciphers were compromised. Also too weak industrially

yeah, they could've held out quite a lot longer if not for the cipher thing...really blows when your ace admiral gets gunned down because you have no infosec

Also the Americans correctly treated their submarine service as basically an arm of its own, whereas the IJN's were always in a supportive role
