Brief reminder that Japan's biggest mistake in the modern era was putting too much importance on its army instead of its navy (feeling more rowdy about this since I'm reading Mahan rn)pic.twitter.com/KSBln8Nizh

        - ally with Korea so they bully China for you - focus expansion south and west - wait for Mingsplosion - get all the successor states to pay you tribute in monarch points ta-da!

I would argue that commitment to any particular plan--rather than flexibility, alertness to circumstances and capacity to change plans accordingly--was the mistake, rather than picking one wrong plan over a better one

ya, if only they had been able to rein in the army--at least before 1937, if not before 1931--and focused on SE Asia (alliance w Thailand, support for rebels & nationalist causes etc), domestic industry, and naval buildup instead

like imagine if they had used WW2 to occupy French and Dutch colonies while Germany was in control of Europe, without getting entangled in China at all--they'd be in an insanely good position by the 1950s

The real problem is that Tojo was an SJW who didn't like Americans because they were racist and thought he could encourage the Indians to rebel against the British, which cost him an insane amt of troops.

the real problem is that there were so many real problems, and only a handful of ways that they could've come out of the 30s/40s ahead

I will say this: the ending of the Pac Theater is much more stale mate-ish than people want to believe. Most of the land we ended up occupying is in Okinawa, which wasn't even part of Japan until like 1890.

Mahan v Corbett is best spergfight, even better than Clausewitz vs Jomini. Although Jomini apologists r greatest kek of all.

Disagree. Japan's overriding problem was political instability - no focus possible as long as either Army or Navy can bring down the government. I'm also skeptical that oil / steel resource limits would have permitted much further naval buildup. Gotta fuel the ships somehow.
