aaaaanyway, after having a lot of fun playing with command codes, I'm trying to get comfortable with the *actual* game again, which sadly means no more instant colonies wherever I want. I am not very patient about this.

To mitigate the shock, I started with a custom Japan that already has most of the home islands, skipping the tedious first few decades of unification. Unexpected consequence: now I'm strong enough on-paper to rival Ming, but without enough combat experience to actually fight them

Currently allied with Korea, Dai Viet, a couple others who I don't recall...recently annexed Ryukyu...I'll post maps at some point, either tonight (late night) or tomorrow (evening)

Not familiar with the game; what's wrong with holding mainland territory?

once you clear a critical mass of colonies in an area, they turn into a subject nation and you're no longer responsible for their development--island territories have same penalty as land ones but many are more lucrative and all are much easier to defend

also, there are fewer island territories than mainland ones, so it's harder to get in over your head
