For now, the main goal of any alliances is to intimidate China...not exactly sure what the plan will be when I'm face to face with the Europeans

In previous no-cheat games I focused way too much on Manchuria/Siberia and North America, hoping to apply that energy south and west instead:https://twitter.com/380kmh/status/929765123396390912 …

Not familiar with the game; what's wrong with holding mainland territory?
-
vulnerable on every side, stronk enemies nearby
-
plus the more territory you try to annex, the further behind you fall in technology and development
-
Huh. But holding far-off territory/colonies is fine?
-
once you clear a critical mass of colonies in an area, they turn into a subject nation and you're no longer responsible for their development--island territories have same penalty as land ones but many are more lucrative and all are much easier to defend
-
also, there are fewer island territories than mainland ones, so it's harder to get in over your head

Why steer to cape? Is this a good point to collect?
-
much easier to control the cape than to get tied up in the Middle East
-
True, and then steer it all the way with ships?
-
with merchants but yeah I will need plenty of ships as well
-
there are two parts to the strategy: - concentrate enough trade in Malacca for the Global Trade institution to spawn there - prevent all that wealth from funneling directly to the Mamluks and Europeans, steering it instead to focal points that I control (of which SA is easiest)
-
Im not a trade expert but read that you can make zanzibar a sort of end node and collect everything there. Googled it:https://www.reddit.com/r/eu4/comments/345dmp/virtual_end_trade_nodes/ …

-
generally speaking whoever shows up and starts setting up colonies is just giving Japan some candy to snap up while they fume from a continent away w inferior navy
-
in the early phase, at least--bit different when the Euros arrive
