I am glad left is meming itself into a 'pro civil war' mindset with retarded new tag. Whatever I may say about Lincoln, he was brilliant strategist. Few realize this. And one of his most brilliant moves: convincing opposition punch first, punch insignificant if symbolic target.

      > make enemy fire first > seize the lifeblood of North American continent (Ohio-Mississippi) > meme a moral issue out of thin air > ruthless attrition > burn their cities

a schwerpunkt only works if you hit the enemy somewhere that counts Pearl Harbor for example - strategically dumb!

Nah, there were lots of mistakes in the Pearl Harbor attack but the concept was strategically sound

No it wasn't. It had no strategic impact on the war except to piss off America. It did not incapacitate the Pacific Fleet. It did not remove Pearl Harbor as a logistics hub. Perhaps if it had taken place during WWI, it might have made more of an impact.

What part of "lots of mistakes" did you miss

"Destroy Pacific Fleet and incapacitate Pearl Harbor" is a great strategy, they just failed to pull off either one. Like "get the ball in the goal" is a good strategy in soccer even if you miss

Sure - but they lacked the resources to do either. And even then 'bring America into a Pacific War' probably outweighs even a total victory at PH, though I grant you between the Oil Embargo and Manilla's location perhaps options were limited.

Ya given the oil embargo I'm not sure what would be a *better* strat than "try to knock out USA while we have a chance"

That said it's a reeeeal pity they didn't know about all that oil in Manchuria until after the war
