People love to argue that the USA is too large, too sparse, and/or too rich to support passenger rail. By all these metrics, South Korea should have much heavier rail use than Japan. But in real life...

Trains were gross and icky in the immediate postwar years because of deferred maintenance. Freeways were the thing.
