People love to argue that the USA is too large, too sparse, and/or too rich to support passenger rail. By all these metrics, South Korea should have much heavier rail use than Japan. But in real life...

Passenger rail use in Japan is FAR higher than in South Korea, which despite generally higher population density than Japan, relies far more on cars for transportation. This is not to say that density has NO relevance for passenger rail--but it's less important than you think!

Frequency of service, network extent/structure; these are both bigger factors--no matter how crowded your city (or country) is, YOU CAN'T USE A TRAIN THAT ISN'T THERE!
