Same as above, but with commuter rail trips added (in italics; Amtrak trips bolded)pic.twitter.com/AomTNmyfSI
For comparison, here is the service frequency on the Dosan Line from Kochi, Japan (red = limited express, black = regular)pic.twitter.com/hnM7eGPDZb
There are 54 departures in each timetable--but the departures out of Kochi are spread out through the day better, with the rush hours only seeing one extra train, vs the departures out of Boston: overwhelmingly concentrated in the peaks, with some hours only seeing one train!
More alarmingly, Boston is a major metropolis at the head of the USA's largest continuous urbanized area, and the Northeast Corridor is the principle railway in that area--whereas Kochi is a minor provincial capital that's not part of any larger metropolitan belt...
Kochi isn't served by any high speed rail lines, and generally speaking, it's faster to drive there from other nearby cities than to take the train. Fewer people live in Kochi's entire Urban Employment Area than in Boston's *municipal* borders, let alone its metro area!
And yet, Kochi has comparable--I would argue superior--intercity rail service to Boston. More consistent midday frequency means the trains are useful for all kinds of trips, not just going to work in the morning and home again in the evening.
Boston's suburban and urban rail networks are certainly more extensive than Kochi's, which is to be expected of a much larger city--but if you're trying to get to a different part of the country, Boston will leave you hanging while Kochi has your back.
