Frankly neither one is *awful,* and since small detached single-family houses are borderline illegal in USA you're stuck sharing walls/floors with neighbors in either case. But I can pretty safely predict that one will be a lot more pleasant on a hot sunny day than the other...

the pics are at the same scale: phoenix has substantially wider roads and larger lots (roughly double the size of the ones shown for tokyo)
