Not the way we are accustomed to building detached houses in USA--but ditch the yards and reduce the building footprint (keeping overall costs lower & making such houses more accessible for low-income buyers) and it's another story https://twitter.com/ded_ruckus/status/1011301084348858368 …

compare: "townhouse"-style apartment complex in Framingham MA (every unit shares at least a wall with at least one other unit) vs. residential neighborhood in Ota Ward, Tokyo (mostly detached houses with some "townhouse" and other apartments scattered throughout)pic.twitter.com/6X46TJPIQ8

Is having a "yard" really worth it when it's neither under your custody nor exclusive for your use? If you can't mow or garden, and can't decide who hangs out there or not--wouldn't it be better just to skip having a yard at that point, and go for something like Ota Ward instead?

Basically, I can understand why people would rather live in a typical US suburb than in the pictured neighborhood--but I have trouble imagining anyone would rather live in typical US "dense development" than in the pictured neighborhoodpic.twitter.com/GR6vThUNND

comparing two neighborhoods: Ten Hills in Somerville, MA vs Maihama in Urayasu, Chiba most units in Ten Hills are duplexes or even more subdivided, whereas in Maihama it's almost entirely detached housespic.twitter.com/DdaSuTl5Rk

Possibly relevant detail: When you buy a detached home, you're fully responsible for that home. When you live in one unit of a multi-unit building, even if it's a condo you bought, generally someone else is responsible for maintenance-type things

Perhaps the people living in those gross townhomes are doing it because it lets them live a life where someone else deals with property maintenance

Perhaps--but given that there ARE no detached homes which are small enough and on small enough plots for them to possibly afford, countless thousands have no choice

The idea is that you shouldn't be trapped in apartment living just because you can't afford 1/4 acre and 2000 square feet--there is a whole universe of detached housing options out there which we could be building which would serve our poor better than apartments do

...and granted that ownership might be beyond their means: even if you're just renting, wouldn't you rather rent a detached unit than an attached one, provided they're of comparable price?
