Not the way we are accustomed to building detached houses in USA--but ditch the yards and reduce the building footprint (keeping overall costs lower & making such houses more accessible for low-income buyers) and it's another storyhttps://twitter.com/ded_ruckus/status/1011301084348858368 …

tbf there probably isn't room to build hundreds of new detached houses in downtown Seattle (and the situation with the suburbs is already awful; traffic is nuts)

compare: "townhouse"-style apartment complex in Framingham MA (every unit shares at least a wall with at least one other unit) vs. residential neighborhood in Ota Ward, Tokyo (mostly detached houses with some "townhouse" and other apartments scattered throughout)pic.twitter.com/6X46TJPIQ8

Is having a "yard" really worth it when it's neither under your custody nor exclusive for your use? If you can't mow or garden, and can't decide who hangs out there or not--wouldn't it be better just to skip having a yard at that point, and go for something like Ota Ward instead?

Basically, I can understand why people would rather live in a typical US suburb than in the pictured neighborhood--but I have trouble imagining anyone would rather live in typical US "dense development" than in the pictured neighborhoodpic.twitter.com/GR6vThUNND

Seattle does townhouses really well. In parts of the city, like Ballard & Fremont, they allow "four-pack" townhouses (2 in front, 2 in back) on 1-fam lots. They're not fully detached but construction costs are still low. They should just zone more land for stuff like this:pic.twitter.com/QBuiwQGh1D

those are nice townhouses--but still, that's a lot of ground area spent on roads and yards compared to buildings...

Ban is a strong word. But it looks like in the Japanese neighborhood the streets are absolutely not car-friendly .

they're car friendly enough that most households own cars and use them regularly--it's not so much that streets in USA are "car friendly" as they are "pedestrian-hostile," whereas the Japanese streets here are pedestrian-and-car friendly

Funny thing, anyone's welcome to try that development -- or would, if Seattle wasn't a hotbed of horrible zoning nightmares and licencing feces. Someone might even want to buy such housing, if Seattle'd let them be built.
