This is an interesting example because you can see how much more developed the rail network is in the areas which had Hapsburg rather than Ottoman control during the 19th century (also, that flatter terrain has denser network than mountainous)

Unless you have extensive knowledge of the territory being served, it's more or less impossible to judge the quality of a rail network just by looking at a map of where it runs. And even if you know the territory, a map like this won't tell you about quality of rail *service*

Which is to say: span of operation, frequency of service, types of trains, condition of stations, etc etc
