The Esolen translation was good, but there's a line where he calls Thomas Aquinas "Tom," and I've never been able to get over that.

yes and his literal translations of the demons' names in the 8th circle is a bit strange, but at least his version is clear, comprehensible, and flows nicely

I also read the John Ciardi version back in college, which IIRC is less literal. But honestly I've never been able to get into translation debates. Most translations are bad, but as long as it's reasonably clear & competent, the original writer will come through.

Anyway, just read Dante, and then read him again, and then read him again in a different translation. He's so good it doesn't even matter.
