Because Japan is dense and compact enough for trains to be feasible unlike in the US unfortunately. Imaging crowding 1/3 of the whole US population into California - that's how dense Japan is.

Imbeciles; population density at the level of the nation is moot for the viability of trains--Switzerland is much less dense than Japan or California, but has even higher rail use per capita than Japan does!

Russia is obviously less dense than the USA, but has a far better national rail network and extensive tram and subway systems in its cities. Australia has under 10% of USA population in similar land area, but has better commuter rail and a comparable national network.
