re: travel times without lanes...my commute by bus is long distance on pretty fast roads with no heavy traffic (between cities, not within one), but it still takes an hour to go 18 miles (partly bc I have to make a transfer halfway through it)

by car it takes about 25 minutes; by train (there is a railway on this exact corridor, but it only gets once-a-day Amtrak service) it could take just 15 minutes!
