needless to say, most Japanese airports are accessible by train, and all (that I know of) are accessible by bus)

Oh yes. America doesn't have a rail network because of: * 1960's through 1990's white flight which made all interurban travel suburb->suburb or suburb->urban at best. * Transit Unions who double the cost of rail service if not more. * Buy America

With that said, there's basically 6 cities worth mentioning on the West side of I-35, isolated from each other by mountains. The entire Western half of the country is best served by planes, and a Vancouver to Portland HSR. And once the West half uses planes for everything...

There are several viable intercity corridors out west, not all of which need HSR--and there are many more situations out west where suburban rail makes sense. People who think rail won't work bc it doesn't work on, say, Dallas to Seattle travel are seriously missing the point

You can't ride a train from Austin to Michigan so Houston should look like this forever with no trainspic.twitter.com/szriL9XZGU

Oh yeah, it's time to densify and retrofit. I've got a Houston->Corpus Cristi -> San Antonio vacation earmarked for 2022 and the traffic from the airport to Galveston is literally adding a day to that trip.

It really adds about 2 hours, but they're the 2 hours that are the difference between "Getting up at 4:00" and "Getting up at 6:00", so at that point, you're flying out the day prior (since I'm not driving Houston to Galveston at midnight).

crazy; at just 50 miles over flat land it wouldn't take more than an hour if they had a decent suburban train there

Now would be a perfect time to try and rezone, demolish, and fix everything since Houston got pretty wrecked by Harvey
