size of a country isn't the pertinent factor in passenger rail use--Russia is much larger and emptier than USA, but has far higher passenger rail use. Australia is about the same size as USA, has <10% of the population, but has better suburban rail + comparable national rail

Honestly, the goal is this: Last Wednesday, I woke up in Cleveland at 6AM and made it to work on time (10:15) in NYC. That's about an hour's flight, 8 hours drive, and a whole bunch of mountains (difficult for rail) in the way. Match that with rail, and I'm in.

In the last year, I did this with: * Detroit (Home) * Cleveland (Home, Cedar Point) * Bar Harbor, ME (Acadia, old friend) With planes, it's literally faster to get to Cedar Point than either of my local Six Flags (New Jersey, New England) and I'd know because I did them both.

If you're headed west, it's even more amazing because you get timezones. (You lose the whole Sunday getting back, since redeyes are bad). If you're in the Eastern timezone, you can literally get to any airport in the country after work on a Friday and land on the same day.
