In fairness, that's because the country is only about 8 hours drive across. http://www.mylifeelsewhere.com/country-size-comparison/united-states/spain …

size of a country isn't the pertinent factor in passenger rail use--Russia is much larger and emptier than USA, but has far higher passenger rail use. Australia is about the same size as USA, has <10% of the population, but has better suburban rail + comparable national rail

No, that was explicitly pointing out the "3 hours" thing is because the country is only 4 hours drive from Madrid and Barca.

Honestly, the goal is this: Last Wednesday, I woke up in Cleveland at 6AM and made it to work on time (10:15) in NYC. That's about an hour's flight, 8 hours drive, and a whole bunch of mountains (difficult for rail) in the way. Match that with rail, and I'm in.

Cleveland to NYC by HSR, on a route via Philadelphia, could take around 4 hours based on Japanese examples (a bit faster if you base it on Chinese examples). But the overwhelming majority of total travel--and of rail travel--is over much shorter distances than this.
