Honestly, the goal is this: Last Wednesday, I woke up in Cleveland at 6AM and made it to work on time (10:15) in NYC. That's about an hour's flight, 8 hours drive, and a whole bunch of mountains (difficult for rail) in the way. Match that with rail, and I'm in.

Cleveland to NYC by HSR, on a route via Philadelphia, could take around 4 hours based on Japanese examples (a bit faster if you base it on Chinese examples). But the overwhelming majority of total travel--and of rail travel--is over much shorter distances than this.
