The frequent assertion that the physical size of the USA makes railways impractical is nonsense--the vast majority of travel, regardless of mode, is clustered around cities and metropolitan areas. Long-distance travel (coast-to-coast long, I mean) is generally for airplanespic.twitter.com/06bUnSfmhO

Also--if physical size of a country precluded rail travel, it would come as a great surprise to Russia and China

But yes--even in Japan, with its extensive and reliable rail network, you'll probably want to fly if you're going from, say, Sapporo to Nagasaki

This is hardly an issue for the railways, since *very few people fly from Sapporo to Nagasaki,* compared with the staggering numbers of people who take shorter distance trips

I find the focus on inter-city rail travel *very* frustrating. I don't even really understand it? It's not like those focused on inter-city rail wouldn't also be the folks who'd benefit from better local rail so much more frequently.

If flights becomes the most practical mode of transportation, to replace trains, will you give up trainsphilia?

Big if, also no it is not out of "practicality" that I like trains the best...the most practical mode for a given trip varies a great deal!

        1. USA has the most active and successful freight rail network in the world. 2. Passenger rail < car in the USA because our cities are not walkable. After arriving at your destination you need a rental car or expensive Ubers.

Not sure the initial assertion was a search for knowledge so grateful you treated it as one. Seems like a logical explanation.

I visited Washington DC for the Cherry Blossom Festival and their Metro system was great! Easy to navigate, and the Metro employees were very friendly and helpful.

Railways are impractical cuz transport between cities already really good/cheap in the US (whether by highway or plane). The problem is transport within cities, which languishes as our elites squander billions on symbolic projects (like HSR) that make rich people happy inside.
