Get what you're saying but something like that is more difficult to fix retroactively. Should they build where the sidewalks/trees are now and cut out some lanes? Honest question.
NYC and grid cities like it are harder to "fix" than a city like Boston bc of the primacy of the road network in laying out the city...but for very wide streets, I would first opt for building in the *center* and converting the street to a pair of narrower ones
This also involves getting rid of on-street parking, which is possibly the worst use of road space imaginable. Aside from the center, most retrofitting would take place on a plot-by-plot basis as buildings get redeveloped, replaced, etc
