One of the main streets converging on Kyodo Station, with a car visible for comparison--look how much traffic is on foot! But I bet many of them don't live nearby, and instead came here by trainpic.twitter.com/EvhdaEUHSK
There are some wider roads that converge on Kyodo, too: moderately-sized roads from the north and the west, and a very wide one (still just two lanes lol) from the east (the direction of central Tokyo) The last one is so wide that they actually named it (Yurinoki Street)pic.twitter.com/GtMAPbuMHg
You could say that in Japan, they're wasting airspace (since the bldgs are shorter), while in NYC, we're wasting land
it would be wasting airspace if tall buildings were prohibited, but it strikes me more as reflecting the actual value of the land
you could fit the same number of residents in a smaller number of buildings if they were all towers at the expense of the urban fabric itself--it would open up unpleasant voids between the buildings
imagine a world... where cities.. didnt have cars... because people didn't need them.. damn..
