Statistics like this are always a bit misleading, since car use will vary enormously for individual people (depending on things like where they live, or how rich they are), but my basic point stands: good trains coexist with cars, rather than replacing them

Presumably that only counts trips that involve a vehicle, and Japan also has a much larger fraction of trips made on foot?
