Even the topics we actually covered in history in school--the Egyptians, the Romans, the early USA, etc--are infinitely more interesting and complex than my lessons would have ever suggested

because it's a dumb point; imagine counting on the history they teach you in school to learn about people and events that actually inspire you--nobody will get as much out of a spoonfed course as they will out of their own research

similar issue with the literature canon in high school; no matter what books they choose you're only going to get a handful to talk about and they'll pale in comparison to the writers you could read on your own
