We can’t pay for 30pin’s upkeep—as in, there’s no feasible way to do so from within Russia—and have to let it lapse. Please read the statement:

We are aware of problems present in version 2.0 of the license and will be looking out for Flickr to update their tools to 4.0 so we can do the same with our photos. We vow not to take advantage of anyone over minor errors in attribution.

Due to Shutterstock and Depositphotos halting payments to Russian creators, we are removing 30pin’s entire photo catalog off stock sites—and relicensing them under Creative Commons Attribution in a goodbye move. Feel free to use them in your projects!

People once used the new HIPAA law to claim that it prevented software updates. "Sneaky service packs".

    Windows and HIPAA
Does Microsoft's new 'we will update you' license comply
with U.S. law on health-care privacy?
BRIAN LIVINGSTON
I REPORTED that Windows'
newest patches - Service Pack
1 for Windows XP and SP3 for
Windows 2000 - contain new
license language that gives
Microsoft the right to silently
revise your operating system
(see "Sneaky service packs," Aug. 26, page 20).
This upsets many companies whose PCs can't
be allowed to morph at will. But those who are
worried the most are IT pros in the health care
field. They must comply by April 14, 2003, with
HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act). Among other things, the law
requires "a compliant technical information
infrastructure." All systems must ensure the secu-
rity and privacy of medical records online. (See
www.hipaadvisory.com/regs/HIPAAprimerl.html.)
Let's set aside for the moment whether todavs
Windows can ensure securitv of anv kind. Let's
also note that, except for XP's Media Player and
digital rights
