97 year-old retired Navy CAPT Royce Williams finally getting his Navy Cross for a legendary (but officially forgotten) dogfight over Korea in 1952 is my favorite story this week. But the media missed half the story: the Top Secret half....so here it is:

Today's guest on #RockRachon was @20committee - a security expert and former National Security Agency. John tells us about the intelligence war that preceded the #Russian aggression on #Ukraine and that is still going on right now. ➡️ youtu.be/XYpNuOnFt-U

Unprovoked? There's an archduke and his wife who might like a word. Also, Austria didn't exist in 1939 but, hey, #details.

Austro–Hungary has been on the side of unprovoked armed aggression in three European wars: 1914-18, 1939-45, and the current 2014-? war. twitter.com/KyivIndependen…

The Chinese state has infiltrated Canadian democracy at all levels, according to a report from investigative reporter . Trudeau has issued a stern denial. Who's telling the truth? And what is Beijing up to in Canada? Sam explains his work.

I saw it and liked it, historically speaking. Midway went far in getting things right in terms of historical accuracy. Even the movie's too-good-to-be-true subplots....were actually true.

You obviously haven't seen 2019's Midway from Lionsgate.

Pearl Harbor is so bad it needs to be hate-watched to grasp its full awfulness, in every aspect. You will need a stiff drink or 2. It's the worst film released by a major Hollywood studio in decades.

I remember seeing PEARL HARBOR in the theater with my HS buddies, and it's maybe the only time in my life I have ever heckled the screen in public. It was the scene where (this shit happens, I swear) FDR stands up out of his wheelchair to prove America can stand up to Japan.

Don't do it. The Pacific is pretty bad. It just doesn't work (despite some good scenes and performances). BoB has created expectations for you that The Pacific can't match.

I am debating whether to dive into THE PACIFIC next, or to really double-down on the horror in a different way by mainlining NARCOS, which comes compulsively recommended to me by people I respect.

McGonigal seems to have been apolitical, just a greedy idiot. Speculating about What It All Means before we understand exactly when he went rogue & why is dumb and counterproductive. Of course, stupid hyperventilated speculation is the Birdsite's special sauce, so here we are.

"That someone as dubious as Linke had been chosen to head that service’s counterintelligence shop explains why the BND was unable to find any Russian mole without incriminating tips from Western partner spy agencies."

Reality: 2 companies of Abrams* won't have much impact on the war. But if NATO gets its act together and can get a couple hundred Leopard 2s to Ukraine in 2023, that will cause real pain for Russia. *Ask the Wehrmacht about how small numbers of super-tanks don't change wars.

The fervidly conspiratorial counterespionage musings of people who's never worked a day as a staff officer in anybody's intelligence service are worthy of laughter, but hey, this is Twitter, so why bother with #facts when there are RTs to be had.

Arthur Scherbius received a patent for a cipher machine, now known as the Enigma, #OTD in 1918. The Germans believed in the innate security of the Enigma. They never realized that the Allies read most of the encrypted Enigma messages throughout #WW2. virmuze.com/m/crypto-museu

It's unsurprising that small numbers of classified docs wind up in the "UNCLAS" papers of former POTUS/VP. Mistakes happen. As long as they're C or S, it's not a huge deal. If there's TS, worse SCI (as with Trump & Biden) something has gone very wrong. That's not a minor error.
