Honestly, just don't use Time Machine. My backup was always "preparing" and "cleaning up" for multiple hours at a time, and every few months I'd get an error popup and my entire backup history was gone.
In my personal case, it even becomes impossible to eject the disk once the backup is done, it will say forever that it’s in use
Well for me that was all automatic. I set up Time Machine by pointing at the local NAS with username and password, and from that point on everything was hidden under the hood... except for when it broke.
I use a network disk as well, but with that I don’t mind whatever happens in bg, but when I am away from home I just use an ext ssd, and that’s what happens
Just the opposite for me. My time machine drive keeps getting ejected on its own. And improperly according to the warning I always get.
