PSA: keep Time Machine disks out of your Finder sidebar. If you don’t, the app will periodically eat half a core for minutes on end as it manually animates the “backing up” spinner using a 30 Hz timer. If you’re curious how I found this, see below; if you work on Finder–FB9056511

Well for me that was all automatic. I set up Time Machine by pointing at the local NAS with username and password, and from that point on everything was hidden under the hood... except for when it broke.

I use a network disk as well, but with that I don’t mind whatever happens in bg, but when I am away from home I just use an ext ssd, and that’s what happens

Just the opposite for me. My time machine drive keeps getting ejected on its own. And improperly according to the warning I always get. I’ll take it off the sidebar and see if it helps.
