This. One of the most head-scratching aspects of all of this is this weird, almost wholly American cognitive barrier to calling these things what they are. Are we all so laden with "American Exceptionalism" that we're unable (likely out of some fear) to speak truth to reality?

not disagreeing, but I think of them as more like the reserve police battalions responsible for a lot of the early work going from village to village to physically remove jews, take them a couple miles out of town and execute families.
