My favorite statue in Portland. He looks so solomn, like the weight of the world rests on him, like he fully feels the impossibility of addressing America's original sin Lincoln was FAR FROM PERFECT, but this makes me sad and no one can stop me from feeling sad about it

Reading about how Lincoln treated indigenous people and how he felt about black people might help you understand.

It's... Not ideal. (I personally feel) Lincoln was better than most in that he wasn't AS active in the harm, but his administration still has a laundry list of atrocities they created or oversaw that get brushed over because they also ended slavery.

See that "Dakota 38" scrawled on the plinth? Lincoln was responsible for the largest mass hanging in American history (38 Dakota men,) and he did it to - essentially - punish Indigenous folk for defending themselves.

Used to be my favorite president. Then I did some research, and damned if that didn't ruin everything. No good presidents.

He really did a "both sides" to slavery, saying "it's awful you have to be slaves, but it's awful whites have to live with you. You should go do your own nation somewhere else."pic.twitter.com/koMoy4wcCp
