I can't tell if this sentiment is the result of a naive right-wing childhood or actual recollection, but: Was there a time in living memory when we didn't have the kind of country where we all just assume we're being lied to about our great leader's health?
1st, solidarity on right-wing childhood. Second, American exceptionalism is a key part of that upbringing so I think lack of honesty, integrity etc does tend to get obscured, downplayed. In hindsight there was a lot of rationalizing & flawed logic I didn’t discern at the time.
PS though I would add this era seems legitimately next-level Soviet-ish.
