An anonymous source sent me video of the Portland Police destroying the Chapman houseless encampment during their charge last night Please observe that the street is clear. Would have been easier and faster to go around instead of pausing to destroy homes But they wanted topic.twitter.com/01OStWKvvX

This is just cruelty for the hell of it This isn't the kind of thing you can reform with more regulations. Body cameras and bans on choke holds won't fix the actual poison, which is a culture of sadism and a delight in wielding power against the powerless

It's the same impulse that makes cops go after the smallest protesters when they rush. It's the same impulse that makes them go after people they perceive as low status, read: black people

We do need law enforcement, I believe that. Humans are violent creatures, any society worth living in has to have some mechanism to deal with that But this ain't it. Our mechanism CAUSES violence, it has to go We need to abolish the police and create something better

I am fully behind BLM and Defund the Police, but I wonder if a slogan like "Demilitarize America," rather than "Defund the Police," would be more effective - particularly in reaching the people who need to be reached. "Defund..." takes too many steps to explain to people.

I agree that "defund the police" and "abolish the police" both sound like things they aren't. Slogans are real hard "demilitarize America," to me, sounds like we just want to take military weapons out of police hands, which is good but doesn't go far enough

"Replace the police" comes close, but doesn't quite do it either We have to have conversations along with our slogans
