This falls in line with discourse around acts of bravery & daring that white privilege inherently enables that often are praised in a way that unintentionally pulls focus. Put another way, an equivalent degree of risk assumed for BIPOC is inherently a more subtle act.

That's not to say this isn't bad ass & obviously takes differ but in listening to a variety of perspectives, the point has been raised that privilege is often absent from conversations around striking actions. What that means isn't for me to judge but def appreciate the dialogue.

I guess I'd like to learn more about what the real-world lessons of this take are. Because in practice what it usually seems to do is tear down acts of bravery (which, this exact fed line fucked up my leg, this person was very brave) without suggesting alternatives

So, those disclaimers in mind: - opinions vary, listen to all of them - if ppl find this harmful rather than helpful, why? - if you want to do something visible, were you asked or encouraged by the ppl you're doing it for? - is a given action the *best* use of privilege? /1

      - we applaud grand gestures but again, making ourselves visible like that is a *choice*, a clothed BIPOC showing up is assuming monumental risk that goes unpraised - white, eurocentric beauty standards are always valued & I can see why ppl wouldn't feel represented by one /2

Is the takeaway to be aware of and praise BIPOC for their less-dramatic-but-high-risk contributions? That makes sense This protester did what they did with the body they have, and I think there should be a way to applaud that. This was not an empty gesture. That was a scary line

The fact that this person could more easily get away with this than a person with a different body is a good reason for them to do it. It's why white people go to the front: not because optics but because it's a way to use that privilege in a way that helps people

Sort of! That's acting as a group, not as an individual. That is listening to repeated directives. It's convenient that this de-escalated a run in but we have to be willing to accept "the hard way," despite the risk to more white people especially, may well be the better way.

I can't say what's most important but evaluating how we uplift Black voices & decenter white ones is a big piece. Most cases like this are done in good faith but was this asked? What seems like the best use of our privilege might be overinformed by that same privilege.
