My parents just crossed into Oregon for a week-long visit at the coast. I'll be joining them there for part of it. They're like "call us to set up plans we are so happy to be here!" so I'm drinking water and trying to remember how to make normal sounds with my mouth about life

"How are you doing?" they will ask and I will say "fine" and they'll make some kind of parent joke and I will laugh and I will hopefully sound like a calm human instead of someone who just got 3.5 hours of sleep after being tear gassed for about 5

No need to pretend. Get them upset that their offspring is being abused

It's a delicate conversation for all the reasons you'd expect and also because they are hardcore right-wing Objectivist capitalists (they are not, thank God, Trump supporters)

Nod, interesting. That seems like....they sit on a knife's edge of being supportive or very opposed. Maybe they can be angry at the police union? Or the cops wanting soldier honor but union perks? May the Force be with you in any case

Extremely this On the one hand they're genuinely mad about police brutality On the other they regard a broken windowpane as morally equivalent to a gallon of blood For sure an interesting visit and thank you for the well wishes I shall need them

I got into a *huge* argument with my mom this week over this exact issue. Not sure how she cares more for the broken statue than her son getting tear gassed but oh well. Hope she enjoys the silence for a few months.

Lots of privileged folks are really, really socialized to trust the police. There's an ingrained assumption that if you interact with them you're already bad, because police deal with criminals ergo you're a criminal.

That's how we get headlines like "12 yr old shot by police...rumors he didn't share once in kindergarten unconfirmed"

Yep, my parents once asked "don't you think these protests invite police violence?" and I'm like "yes, absolutely, now take two seconds to think about how deeply repugnant it is that that's true"
