I've never been a soldier, but I do long-distance backpacking. Training w/my gear beforehand (esp. if it's new) has helped me mightily. I've saved myself much grief by working out the kinks of fit, weight, friction spots, etc. in an area close to home, rather than on the trail.
I mean, it can be Tell me you don't know people who were forced to train on injuries instead of taking like, a few days off, who now have permanent injuries
