I said, I have a legal right to be on this sidewalk. He said, I can close the sidewalk Physically, it's true. Legally, it isn't. By my understanding there would have to be an official announcement, an unlawful assembly declared: one cop can or decide to overrule the law
I told him this. He asked if I wanted to get arrested I told him I did not but that I was going to exercise my right to stand on the sidewalk We all waited. We got on our knees with our hands up We were warned several times to vacate
And then they left Because they can't legally arrest people on the sidewalk And they knew that. They just hoped we didn't They use intimidation to get us to obey when they don't have a legal leg to stand on, and we cannot let them, ESPECIALLY those of us who look white
This legal protection won't always save us. I didn't expect it to save me last night honestly But these protests are about asserting our rights. To free speech, including insulting cops. To freely assemble. EVERYONE'S right to do these things without brutality or arrest
