What I'm about to say does not cancel out what you just said but is also true: Ulysses S Grant called the US Army (not the guard) in against the KKK in the south, despite rabid opposition, and was the last President to go to the mat to try and make Reconstruction happen

Yeah that’s true, he did some good things, but he wasn’t without his problems and people are crying about his statue being torn down

If I was making a list of statues that need torn down, a lot of people would be further up my list than Grant. It's whatever, but it's not my favorite ngl

Historical figures can be complicated and that's part of the reason I think statues celebrating specific, esp 'mixed' 'great men' are a terrible idea.

I'm just not as anti-statue as most people are in this particular moment. No tears, but not really cheers either There's a deeper issue the left needs to explore at some point: most humans have done bad shit at some point in some area of their lives. Can anyone be admired?
