My relationship with America is complicated. The ideals espoused at its founding are beautiful. The reality has always been monstrous: a slave empire carved from broken treaties and genocide. What are we to do with such a legacy?

Can we ever purge ourselves of that original sin, fully embrace the half-articulated promises of human freedom of our Declaration of Independence and our constitution? I don't know

But if there's any hope, it lies in full recognition of that sin and reparations for it, inasmuch as true reparation is possible Maybe that means statues have to fall. Not just physically, but spiritually. A full recognition of just who created America, and why

People look at fallen statues and say, they hate America. I love America. This stupid shithole country, I love it with all my heart and I'll always love it and all I want is for it to deserve that love, all I want is for it to become the place it thinks it is

I love hearing your thoughts on this. I’m really in the same boat. I want to be able to feel patriotic without any sort of cognitive dissonance, and I want every American to be able to feel supported and at home here

I feel like any critique of America immediately gets judged as hatred for America which is just so far from the truth. If anything I want the ideals of America to actually be realized

IMO America still has a chance, we Americans living today will decide what Becomes of that chance and whether or not America realizes its potential within our lifetimes.
