I am aware of no police who were killed by water bottles. But there were police killed. Maybe there’s a part of the joke I’m missing.

The joke is, most of the tear gassing and rubber bullet assaults start as a result of people throwing water bottles at cops Based on Google, one police officer has been killed in these national protests, and this definitely isn't a send-up of that actual murder
