If you were fortunate enough to grow up with parents who didn't teach you that, say, trans people are perverts with mental disorders, or that European culture is the only moral culture, congratulations and how nice for you. It doesn't make you better. It makes you lucky

For real though, I grew up in a Reagan Republican house. I'm lucky my mom had been close to her cousin (who, ironically, died of AIDS because of her beloved Ronnie), since it made her pro-gay at least.
Good God, I hate thinking how homophobic I was growing up. Good on her or whatever, but like being young and ignorant isn’t a sin. The point is being willing to learn and change.
