TIL way too many people think private prisons operate by profiting off the labor of prisoners. Guys, it’s still the government paying.

I mean I may be misunderstanding but I think they profit off of both. Mostly the government, to be fair, but both

As I understand it, private prisons overwhelming form of income is the government. This came from an online discussion where it was asserted that if the government failed, private prisons would continue to operate, which is clearly false.https://www.investopedia.com/articles/investing/062215/business-model-private-prisons.asp …

This should not be construed as me advocating for private prisons. Criminal justice is one of the things that belongs under government purview. I am a Libertarian, not an anarchist.

Not that they’re doing a bang up job at the moment. I just don’t see how further complicating it with a private entity with government incentives will make a positive change.

Yeah, our prisons are an abomination before God and I don't have strong enough language to describe how evil private prisons are I want a total overhaul of our justice system: burn it all down and start over

From my teenage years to my late 20’s I had a member of my nuclear family in prison. It’s maddening the things that are excusable to polite society in the name of criminal justice. But reform barely touches the platforms of Dems and is anathema to R’s. Heartbreaking.

Not to prosthelytize, but the only people I've seen who actually seem to care about prison reform in a substantive way is the left (as opposed to liberal Democrats who, as with so many things, talk a good game and do both jack and shit)

It’s a constant talking point for Libertarians and

Interesting--the circles I ran with when I was that type definitely didn't talk about it much but I'm glad it's a thing in some libertarian circles. The more people who care about this issue, the better

We talked about the disconnect between perceptions of Libertarian ideas vs reality. I’d recommend to anyone to give those a follow just to get a true feel for their actual talking points.
