Most domestic violence shelters turn away men despite men being victims of domestic violence as well. Groups who care about men’s rights open up shelters for them:https://www.npr.org/2017/07/15/537381161/more-domestic-violence-shelters-for-men-opening …

But I should clarify: I do not consider myself an MRA and I don’t prefer men’s rights to women’s rights. What I mean to say is, feminist groups and academics can be quite adversarial to issues men face despite claiming the opposite.

Some are. More aren't. "Feminism" is am ENORMOUS tent, there are some assholes in there for sure. But feminists are the ones doing the work to tear down structures that advocate things like 'real men don't experience DV' and 'only men should be sent to war' and 'boys don't cry'

I would agreed with you, but again there are examples of feminist leaders and academics in the movie saying the exact opposite and treating it as a zero-sum game. Yes, Big Red makes an appearance, but the most offensive statements come from a USC professor in gender studies.

I think the problem is inherent in the ideology. That it’s *the advancement of women’s interests* to promote equality. There’s nothing wrong with advancing women’s interests, but it’s not the same as pushing for equality across the board. We shouldn’t pretend that it is.

Gonna disagree with you there, shockingly. If group 1 is significantly behind group 2, advancing group 1 is how we get to a place of equality. It seems to me self-evident that women have, in fact, been oppressed. A century ago, I would not have been allowed to vote.

Until 1975, I would have needed my husband's permission to open a bank account. There are still lots of people advocating a return to "traditional gender roles": read, me in the kitchen popping out babbies. I don't want babbies. I want to fight fascists and read books and shit

As a metaphor: imagine there are two types of cancer: skin cancer and liver cancer. And let's say I start a charity for liver cancer research. I'm not anti-skin cancer for doing this. I'm not saying skin cancer isn't important. I'm concentrating on liver cancer, and that's OK.

And--added bonus!--breakthroughs in liver cancer research will almost certainly benefit skin cancer research also It's OK for a movement to focus primarily on a specific problem and not every single problem all at once

I hope I was clear in saying it’s okay to focus on skin cancer, but we shouldn’t be forced to pretend like you’re working to fix all health problems when you only focus on skin cancer.

That's perfectly fair! But the original argument seems to be that because liver cancer charities don't focus on skin cancer, you can't really call yourself a supporter of the liver cancer charity. There's surely room to support both
